New Lesbian Cookbook

After a number of queries about a sequel to the butch cook book, Nel and I decided, “Why not?!”  The new one will include submissions from all self-identified lesbians—singles, couples, mothers; grandmothers, teenagers, et al.  You get the idea.

We’re asking for contributions with a maximum of four recipes from each person.  The information that we need is listed below.  Please email to thebutchcookbook@charter.net.  In addition, for copyright permission, please fax the recipe, accompanying information, and completed waiver (541-265-9434) or mail it to TRP Cookbooks, Box 2304, Newport, OR  97365.  All pages should be initialed.

Recipe Name:  [Example:  Chocolate Delight]

Your Name(s):  [Example:  Nel Ward]

Name(s) Used in the Cookbook(s):  [Example:  Nel]

About the Recipe:  Suggestions—source of recipe (maybe family history); ethnic derivation; place in meal (i.e., soup, salad, side dish, etc.); any adventure surrounding the cooking or eating of this dish; etc.

[Example:  One evening when my family (including two children ages five and seven) came to dinner, I was looking for a simple dessert and decided on this fun fondue.   This can be almost entirely fixed ahead of time with only the melting and stirring done at the last minute.   It’s great for kids because it’s interactive and can be served to any number of people by putting the hot chocolate into bowls around the table instead of using a fondue pot.  On the other hand, it’s an elegant finish to a meal for adults.  Some people dip; others spread the chocolate mix over the goodies on their plates.  Both delicious and different, this dessert is, most importantly, easy!]

Ingredients:  List number of people that the recipe serves and the specific amounts such as weight and size of can, jar, box, bag, package, etc.

[Example:  The following serves four people.  Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated.

1 C. (6 oz.) chocolate chips
1/3 C. heavy cream
1 or 2 T. brandy (just get a tiny bottle if you don’t have some around)
Dipping stuff:  strawberries, pineapple, small cookies, chunks of angel food cake, whatever your heart desires]

Directions:

[Example:

  1. Melt the chocolate chips over a medium heat.
  2. Mix cream into melted chips until mixture is warm.
  3. Stir in brandy to taste.
  4. Pour into two small bowls and serve with dipping stuff]

Comments on different aspects of cooking:  Suggestions--cooking for a special evening with friends; a romantic evening at home; couples cooking together; cooking for—or with—kids; lesbians cooking for the folks; tasty nutritional meals; history of the recipes; funny stories about cooking; specialty cooking for such activities as camping, picnics, potlucks, tailgate parties, barbeques, school lunches, and sleep-overs; and family pet menus!

Biography:  Suggestions—occupation(s); cultural and ethnic background; interests, maybe in food; information about any children/grandchildren; if partnered, stories of how you met and how long you’ve been together; sharing food preparation (deciding menus, shopping, cooking together, cleanup); teaching others to cook; getting fussy eaters to eat; favorite meals; nutritional fast and easy snacks; etc.

[Example:  Bio:  Nel is a long-time lesbian who has lived with her partner for almost 40 years and shares the cooking duties with her.  During their several lives, they have taught high school, operated bed & breakfasts, run a bookstore, and now have a publishing company.  Her delights are reading mysteries and children’s books, walking two standard poodles on the beach, and trying out new recipes.]

Optional:  Photos (faces, hands, shadows, action shots, etc.) for the cookbook website and other promotional material; website, blog, MySpace, or other internet address to be posted on the cookbook website.
